In recognition that while adolescents still need boundaries, they yearn for independence, the structure of the school day changes as they enter Middle School. Students move from class to class in eight academic subject areas as well as art, music, and computer science.
In the classroom, there is an emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. For example, study of mythology as part of their exploration of the ancient world in history class is linked to study of the solar system in science, and in art they construct constellation “umbrellas.” In English they use language and computer skills to put out a newspaper; laying it out is a measurement project in math class.
We are confident that the breadth and depth of our Middle School curriculum prepare our graduates well for the big move to secondary school. It is gratifying that the vast majority of our eighth graders are accepted by the high school that is his or her first choice. As our alumnae/-i often confirm, doors open for our graduates as they leave Holy Child behind.
